What Is Shine On! Kids?
Shine On! Kids (SOK) is a certified non-profit organization in Japan that supports children facing childhood cancer or other serious illnesses, as well as their families.
For children who must spend long periods in hospitals, emotional care is just as essential as medical treatment. SOK is one of the few organizations in Japan that specializes in supporting this emotional and psychological side of care, delivering a wide range of programs directly within medical settings.

One of the most symbolic parts of SOK’s work is the presence of the facility dogs—highly trained dogs who work alongside medical teams in hospitals. They sit beside children waiting anxiously outside the operating room, stay quietly next to them on sleepless nights, and offer gentle comfort after painful procedures. For many children, these dogs are like a small, steady light of reassurance in an otherwise difficult time.
SOK also supports children through the expertise of Child Life Specialists (CLS), who help ease anxiety around treatment and hospitalization. Programs like Camp Courage create opportunities for children to try new experiences, build confidence, and rediscover joy. At the same time, SOK develops systems that support not only young patients, but also their families and the medical staff who care for them. Their work is broad in scope, continually evolving to meet the needs of each hospital and each child.
SOK’s hope—“to make the time spent facing illness a little more positive”—extends quietly but unmistakably. It touches the lives of children and families, influences the atmosphere of medical settings, and slowly, gently spreads throughout society.

Over the past several years, LIFE.14 has walked alongside the team at Shine On! Kids, documenting the journeys of children and the facility dogs who support them.
Among the moments we have captured are the bright, celebratory evenings of the annual Gala, as well as the quiet, intimate ceremonies held in the soft morning light of a hospital corridor—welcoming a new facility dog or bidding farewell to one who has completed their years of service.
Through our work behind the camera, we have come to understand that each of these scenes, no matter how grand or modest, carries the same weight for SOK. Every moment is meaningful; every moment is part of their mission.
The Moment When a New Life Takes the Baton
Over the years, we have witnessed many facility dogs begin their service—and many complete it. Each “arrival” and each “graduation” has carried its own quiet weight.
Just this month, we photographed the inauguration of Ori, the newest facility dog, at Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center. As Ori stood beside the children for the very first time, there was a gentle tension in her posture—an awareness of what lay ahead, and the sense of a long new story about to unfold.

On the very same day, we also witnessed the retirement ceremony of Annie, a facility dog who had spent many years by the side of countless children. In her eyes—eyes that had met and soothed hundreds of tears—there was a deep, quiet calm, and a gentle “thank you” reflected back from the nurses, families, and staff who had walked alongside her.

We have witnessed these “passing of the baton” moments many times. And each time, our hands tremble just a little as we record them. They may not be headline-making events, but they are undeniably moments that hold and support someone’s life.
Records That Grow Alongside the Children
Following SOK’s activities over many years means encountering moments when we suddenly notice how much a child has grown. “When we first photographed them, they were so small—and now look how strong they’ve become.” It’s a realization that comes to us again and again.
There was the child at Camp Courage in the summer, who gathered all their courage to smile in front of friends—friends other than their own family—for the very first time.

There was the child who rarely smiled in their hospital room, yet we captured the moment they quietly reached out their hand to a facility dog.
And there was the child at Hyogo Prefectural Children’s Hospital who smiled and said, “We got to see you again!” when we visited.

Even though we are only watching through the camera, we gradually find ourselves feeling as if we are the ones “watching over” their growth.
Realizing this shift has been one of the meaningful changes we ourselves have experienced while documenting the work of SOK.。
Witnessing the Power of People Supporting One Another
SOK’s activities are not only about the bright, celebratory moments on stage. They also include many quiet, steady efforts—work that may seem modest on the surface, yet carries an immense strength.
One example is the large-scale annual fundraising event, “Fighters Meet Fighters.”

Supporters, families, medical staff, and children who once received support—so many different feelings gather in one place, and on that day, you can clearly sense the invisible power of people becoming connected.
Through our cameras, we have witnessed again and again how beautiful it is when people act for someone else.
Moments like these go beyond the scope of photography; they are the kinds of experiences that stay with us as members of society.
What It Means for LIFE.14 to Continue Documenting SOK
For us at LIFE.14, our work with Shine On! Kids is not just another project. After many years of walking alongside their team, it has become a core part of our own social mission.
Quietly recording the growth of children, conveying the emotions that arise in medical settings through words and photographs, preserving the stories woven by the facility dogs for the future, making visible the reasons why supporters choose to stand with SOK, and passing along a quiet yet certain sense of hope to society—these small but meaningful acts are the very reasons we continue to document SOK’s work.
Each activity carried out by SOK is a story in itself. It may not be flashy, but it is undeniably a moment that supports someone’s life.
LIFE.14 will continue to stay close to these stories, gently pressing the shutter as they unfold.
So that a little more light may reach the future of every child. And so that the mission of Shine On! Kids may find its way to even more people.
