From October 7 to 9, 2025, LIFE.14 had the privilege of providing official photography coverage for the Symposium on Information, Data and Knowledge Management for Radioactive Waste, organized by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and hosted locally by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO).
The three-day international event brought together experts from around the world — researchers, policymakers, industry professionals, and representatives of local communities — to address one of the most enduring and complex challenges faced by humankind: how to manage, preserve, and transmit knowledge about radioactive waste safely across generations.

The discussions delved into the entire lifecycle of radioactive waste — from creation to final disposal — and explored how societies can maintain well-structured, long-term information systems that transcend policy changes and technological evolution.
While advances in digital technology have made it easier to collect and query vast amounts of data, participants also emphasized the growing issue of digital obsolescence and the ethical responsibility of ensuring that crucial knowledge remains accessible for decades, or even centuries, to come.

NEA expert groups — including the Expert Group on a Data and Information Management Strategy for the Safety Case (EGSSC), the Expert Group on Knowledge Management for Radioactive Waste Programmes and Decommissioning (EGKM), and the Expert Group on Archiving and Awareness Preservation (EGAAP) — shared their latest findings and outlined future directions.
The symposium also featured country case studies and networking sessions, fostering dialogue and the exchange of best practices among international stakeholders. Together, participants sought to build a shared vision for the long-term stewardship of nuclear information.

At LIFE.14, we view documenting such moments of international collaboration and intellectual exchange as part of our social responsibility. By visually recording the people and ideas shaping the future of science, ethics, and sustainability, we aim to contribute to a deeper public understanding of issues that affect not only our generation but those to come.
Through our lens, we captured the intensity of the discussions, the sincerity of the participants, and the quiet determination of those striving to ensure that knowledge and awareness endure over time.
LIFE.14 remains committed to supporting the advancement of global science, education, and environmental dialogue — as a visual partner dedicated to social responsibility and the preservation of collective knowledge.
